要約

This paper is intended for Japanese university teaching staff who are interested in faculty development (FD). After a brief discussion on the necessity for improving the quality of learning and teaching, the British author gives an overview of recent changes in the higher education system in the UK, where staff development units have been established at universities and the government is aiming to have all new university teachers take accredited courses by the year 2006. The author goes on to describe the situation in Japan and suggests that Japanese universities should try to learn from the UK and attempt to implement more comprehensive FD programmes as soon as possible. In the final section, he gives links to numerous on-line resources (including teaching techniques).
