Abstract

This paper describes the concept of social development and the need for developing a new approach to the process of social development.  Social development differs from other institutionalized approaches for promoting social welfare namely social work, social administration, and philanthropy.  The paper describes the historical evolution of the concept of development from its colonial origins, through international organizations, to the present.  Particular attention is given to the recent history of social development.  The paper also analyses the nature in the conceptualization of social development over time.  Conclusions are drawn from the description and analysis of historical trends in the evolution of social development.
