Academic Interests
Community studies: Toshiko Bunya's academic career began with a study of the conflict and cooperation between newcomers and long-standing residents in a local community on the outskirts of the Tokyo Metropolitan area. Since then she has completed various research projects on local communities in both urban/suburban and rural areas. Prof. Bunya is currently working on a project focused on the neighborhood society of a local community in Fukuoka.
Comparative study of neighborhood communities in Italy and Japan: Since 2001, Professor Bunya has been investigating the Contrada of Siena, Italy, and comparing it with the Chonaikai (neighborhood organizations) in Japan.
Popular participation in local government: This is of vital importance, but is not so common in Japan. The reasons behind this are complex and the issue requires careful examination.
Other Information

Working within Fukuoka's local government, Toshiko Bunya is a member of the Fishing Rights Commission of the Ariake Sea and the Commission of Agricultural Subsidies for Farmers in Mountain Areas. These experiences have greatly influenced her research work. For this reason, she is always occupied with work both inside and outside of the university, but her real passion is cooking for friends, traveling and relaxing in nature, reading books and spending time with her cat.
