Towards a greater understanding of the human condition
The Department of Human Development and Education emphasizes the development of individuals capable of engaging in and contributing to humanitarian and educational programmes. With a view to encouraging lifelong development, students are provided with an interdisciplinary education in such fields as pedagogy, psychology, and health sciences. Of particular relevance are studies pertaining to character-development at all stages of life.
In view of Japan's aging society and greater diversification in terms of values, the department also encourages students to exert their own individuality in creating and contributing to support systems and programmes designed to enhance the quality of life.
The curriculum allows students to take courses in three different disciplines, namely pedagogy, psychology and theory of lifelong development. Students also obtain a deeper understanding of human development through teaching practice in kindergartens and nursing training in care facilities. These practical aspects are conducted as part of the department's commitment to research on early education and health sciences.
