The Department of Social Welfare at Fukuoka Prefectural University encourages the study of social welfare systems and policies as well as practical welfare-related work in local communities.
Regarding social welfare in Japan, a process of decentralization is already underway. Dedicated professionals capable of using their own initiative are therefore essential. At FPU, students are required to conduct research into local communities and the surveying techniques employed there. Empirical studies into local systems and policies are similarly encouraged, with first-year students undertaking field work in order to develop practical skills and gain experience in problem-solving.
Regarding their contribution to the welfare of the local community, FPU students are encouraged to first develop their understanding of issues affecting the individual, the family, and the local community. The students therefore devise appropriate research methodologies and strategies through which to investigate these aspects. This research also gives them the opportunity to cooperate with social agencies and other organizations and facilities.
