The Health Promotion Education and Research Center has, since its foundation in April 2006, made a profoundly positive contribution to the welfare of ordinary citizens in and around Tagawa. Consequently, it is now recognised as one of the most important health facilities available to the local community.
In the past, health facilities and medical care tended to prioritize diagnosis and treatment. This practice of reacting to already-extant health problems nevertheless ignored the innate ability of the human body to protect and heal itself. This latter philosophy is reliant upon an awareness of the health promotion techniques available to the local community through the Health Promotion Education and Research Center at Fukuoka Prefectural University. Specifically, the center prioritizes the following three areas of educational training, the welfare of local citizens and research:
1) In terms of EDUCATIONAL TRAINING, the center offers programs to professionals working in medical treatment and healthcare, for example:
i) Further education and refresher courses for school nurses.
ii) Education in breast-feeding and early childcare for new and expectant mothers.
iii) Education for pre- and post-natal healthcare for new and expectant mothers.
iv) Education pertaining to diabetes.
v) A workshop in practical medical care and training.
2) Regarding the WELFARE OF LOCAL CITIZENS, the center provides a variety of programs related to healing, maternal care, etc. A "healing space", therapeutic oil massages and other services are available to local citizens, while the pre- and post-natal healthcare program offers a class on stimulating the senses of new and expectant mothers in order to help them give birth and raise their children. In addition, open lectures, workshops, health classes and a Chikuho citizens colloquium on "healthy aging" are similarly available through the center.
3) The center's RESEARCH component is primarily concerned with the following health promotion issues:
i) Appropriate response to adolescents with behavioural problems.
ii) Health promotion among the citizens of Aka village (integrated research).
iii) Childcare and child-rearing in Japan and South Korea (comparitive research).
iv) Reconciling western and oriental medicines.
v) Female healthcare through the stimulation of the senses.
By virtue of the above, the Health Promotion Education and Research Center at Fukuoka Prefectural University continues to enhance the quality of life in the local community.
