The School and Child Support Center for School Refusal (SCSCSR) at Fukuoka Prefectural University offers support to children who choose not to go to school. In some cases, the problem may be so acute that the affected child is reluctant to even step outside of his or her own room or family home.
Through its highly-trained and permanent staff, the SCSCSR seeks to address the reasons behind the child's withdrawal and restore his or her social confidence and independence. The center also provides an expansive support network encompassing both schools and students and facilitating regular and constructive interaction between them.
Specifically, the SCSCSR provides the following services towards the resolution of the problem of school refusal:
1) A counseling network for children, parents and teachers.
2) A support network for children comprising the following:
i) The provision of Fukuoka Prefectural University students acting as tutors, "study buddies", discussion partners and playmates. This interaction takes place at the university or alternatively at the child's regular school or a school for non-attending pupils.
ii) A support and consultation network for teachers and schools.
iii) A further network system linking to related agencies and support services.
3) Information and training programs, as follows:
i) The SCSCSR maintains an informative and useful website for the benefit of affected schools and students.
ii) Similarly, the center regularly publishes a journal giving advice on how to deal with non-attendance.
iii) Related training programs for teachers.
iv) Symposiums attended by expert speakers and addressing the problem of school refusal.
v) The center also acts as a focal point for further research on the issue.
Through the above, the SCSCSR is fully committed to the concept of an education system accessible to all.
